Filling the Gaps | 120 Seconds to Better Leadership

Quick tip on closing the talent gaps right now.

I have one client who's the head of I.T. for a medium-sized company, and they're just getting killed by people working remote for companies that are outside the state. And their company is very much an in-person company, so they're really struggling to fill some of those talent gaps.

So one of the things that they've been trying, and they've tried everything, I don't think I've seen a leader be this creative in trying to get talent in the door with mixed results, I'll be honest.

But one of the things that he's doing that's actually working pretty well right now is getting former employees or potential employees to moonlight for the company.

Now, I have to say this with a word of caution because I have seen people working two full-time jobs, all from home, during COVID and then getting caught for it and getting fired. So we want to not put people in an unethical situation. But for folks that have a full-time gig and they may have an extra 5, 10 hours a week that they want to make some extra money working,

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. And so sometimes it's not getting the full-time employee, sometimes it's getting enough people that are willing to do enough moonlighting that you can cobble together a full-time person. So I don't know yet how it's going to work out. So far, it seems to be going pretty well, which makes me a little bit optimistic.

So it might be worth a try.

But I think in this talent economy, it's going to take every ounce of creativity that we all have to make sure that the work gets done.
